OMF-Film

With four music videos filmed and two completed, all work on OMF's Christian music initiative (at the time known as Ssounds), ceased temporarily to allow OMF to concentrate on Down & Out feature production. With D&O complete, released and streaming freely (see Box Office), the project is again in production.

The History
At the time of the Covid 19 Pandemic lockdown in the UK, groups were not allowed to meet so there were no church services. As the country exited lockdown, the government put in a condition on groups meeting together being a maximum of six, which obviously meant that the ban on services with full congregations continued.
The Problem
To address those situations the vast majority of churches set up streaming projects for on-line services that their congregations could view in their own homes. OMF produced numerous shorts for the Southport corps (church) of the Salvation Army, ranging from bible readings and sermons to carols played by a sextet drawn from that church's brass band.
So far, so good.
But away from OMF, a prolific supply of newly filmed music, hymns and Christian songs of mixed quality from the UK and overseas was posted on-line for free use.

The ideas were laudable but in some cases the productions were simply not good enough. Locations were often inappropriate, backgrounds sometimes still slides with lyrics hard to read, tunes unfamiliar or not melodic while new songs were often just one verse repeated again and again. As for production quality - we dare not comment!
OMF Reaction
Having produced award winning feature movies, OMF created a project to produce broadcast standard Christian music shorts and make them available to churches everywhere. The concept was good and the first two songs hit their targets. However, in a face to face discussion a church leader refused to allow his musically gifted daughter to take part and clearly preferring to continue using sub standard amateur home video and content from his friends, stated that he would never plan a service to include any Ssounds content!
Current Development
With OMF already taking a step back to produce Down & Out, there was no immediate impact. Considerable thought throughout D&O production, during which the team had viewed many a dubious clip (one person observing that 'I don't want American karaoke with words I cannot read),' served only to strengthen OMF's commitment to creating broadcast quality Christian music shorts - and possibly also biblical story shorts.
In-Post and Future Production
In line with the overall production step back of OMF due to advancing crew ages, there is a new concept for Christian shorts. The original Ssounds and OldManFilm web sites are in the process of being closed down. Those first shorts will be re-cut where appropriate. And In addition to again featuring existing musicians and vocalists, OMF will now also use the same professional casting sources as with its feature films to identify additional new faces, voices and musicians.

Be aware that the shorts you can preview here are the original Ssounds music shorts which may not yet have been re-cut and could still contain web references that have now been superseded. Use only omf-film web addresses.

What'll I Do?
  • Important information Read first
Written by Irving Berlin back in 1923 as a soliloquy to his fiancé when she was sent away by her father on a one year trip to Europe because he did not approve of Berlin, this version of the song was published by Ssounds / OMF on the centenary of What'll I Do, with Berlin's original verses amended to refer to what will I do without God and two new Christian verses written by screenwriter Vic Marelle added.

The new Christian version was an attempt by OMF / Ssounds to bring melodic jazz music into church, combatting the many decidedly unmelodic and virtually tuneless clips circulating on the internet following Covid-19 lockdown.

To achieve that, OMF created a computer generated virtual jazz club with real soloist and musicians performing on stage. Versions include a solo singer, a duet and a threesome, all backed by typical melodic jazz musicians including a string bass and Phil Shotton, one of the UK's best saxophonists.

Eventide
  • Important information Read first
Titled for William Henry Monk's tune normally associated with Henry Francis Lyte's familiar hymn Abide With Me, Eventide was originally created as a personal project several years before Covid hit the UK but later used as a concept for potential OMF religious shorts. That initiative subsequently became the Ssounds project. In that guise Eventide was only ever to be viewed in meetings between the OMF crew and church leaders as an example of what potential short film treatment could achieve. There was never any intention of releasing this short.

Indeed, any distribution or internet visibility would be illegal and as such, Eventide cannot be viewed by general public and access is restricted with strict conditions applied.
  • Original version low resolution
This is the original version intended only as a concept. Lyrics captions were added later but considered to be too small and too light. This concept option is just 854x480 pixels which is similar to DVD but still enables the concept style to be apparent for discussion.
